When you’re new to vaping, the number of terms and abbreviations that get thrown around can get pretty confusing, if not downright intimidating. MTL and DTL are two of the more common abbreviations you’ll see - they stand for mouth to lung and direct to lung, respectively, and they’re the two different techniques you can use to vape.
So what are they, what are the differences between the two, and which one should you use? Let’s find out:
Mouth to Lung Vaping
MTL vaping is certainly the most popular style - there are a few reasons for this. First, the equipment you need for MTL vaping is less expensive and more widely available. JUULs, cig-a-likes, and other readily available vapes are perfect for MTL vaping.
Second, MTL is how most cigarette smokers smoke, and many present-day vapers start vaping to quit smoking.
So what exactly is MTL? Simply put, you inhale the vapour into your mouth, then into your lungs. This has a number of important consequences:
First, you’ll get a throat hit that’s very similar to the feeling you experience when smoking. Second, you’ll be able to taste the flavour of the vape juice much more clearly. This makes MTL perfect if you’re trying out new flavours or trying to craft your own.
When shopping for juice, there are a couple of key things to keep in mind if you plan on vaping MTL. First, you’ll generally want to pick juices that are higher in PG than VG. There’s a couple of reasons for this. MTL vaping tends to produce less clouds than DTL, so it’s better for use in public - to complement this, PG tends to produce less clouds than VG.
The second reason vaping juice with a higher PG ratio can be useful is that it tends to produce a throat hit that more closely resembles that of a cigarette - perfect for former smokers.
One of the great things about MTL vaping is that you’ll have more options when it comes to how much nicotine you can get. You’ll learn more about why that’s the case in the DTL section, but it basically has to do with access to nic salts, which you can read more about on our blog.
Direct to Lung Vaping
DTL vaping happens when you don’t hold any vapour in your mouth at all - you inhale it all directly into your lungs. This technique emulates natural breathing, and it can lead to a lot of clouds. If you’re a cloud chaser, this is the tech for you - it’s not the most newbie-friendly method of vaping, however, and it doesn’t quite emulate the feeling of smoking a cigarette.
The first thing you need to know is that DTL vaping requires a pretty intense setup. You’ll want a box mod that can produce high wattage, and a sub-ohm tank in order to let that coil get nice and hot. You’ll also need a dense cotton wick that can saturate quickly with a lot of vape juice - DTL vaping leads to you vaping higher quantities more quickly (which leads to all of those clouds).
You’ll want to basically follow the opposite juice steps to what we described in the MTL section - in other words, you should use high VG juices with low levels of nicotine. This is, in part, because while high VG juices tend to offer less flavour, they offer bigger clouds. That’s perfect, because DTL hits aren’t very flavourful to begin with, and clouds are usually the goal.
The reason you’ll need low nicotine is two-fold. The most important of these is that if you intake too much nicotine at once, you can be poisoned, and that is not where you want to be. DTL vaping means inhaling a lot more vapour, so high nicotine content is particularly dangerous.
The second reason is that DTL hits tend to be pretty harsh, especially when you’re new to them. Heating up juice that’s high in nicotine to the levels required for enjoyable DTL vaping is a bad idea - it will eviscerate your throat like you’ve never smoked in your life.
